Disc

Find out some of the most common causes of a slipped disc here and how physiotherapy might help.

A slipped disc, also known as a herniated or prolapsed disc, can cause anything from mild discomfort to serious nerve pain that disrupts daily life. It’s one of the most common spinal conditions treated at Regenesis Physiotherapy.

If you’re living with back or neck pain, tingling, or weakness, you could be dealing with a slipped disc without even realising it. Fortunately, early diagnosis and non-invasive physiotherapy at Regenesis can help promote recovery and manage symptoms effectively.

Common slipped disc symptoms to watch out for:

What Is a Slipped Disc?

A slipped disc happens when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc bulges or leaks out through a crack in the tougher exterior. This disc herniation can irritate nearby nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness, usually in the lower back (lumbar spine) or neck (cervical spine).

The spine’s discs act like cushions between vertebrae, absorbing shock and helping flexibility. When one of these discs breaks down or becomes injured, it can no longer protect the spine properly, which is where symptoms begin.

Who Needs to go for a Slipped Disc Treatment?

Anyone experiencing back pain, stiffness, or nerve-related symptoms like numbness or tingling may benefit from slipped disc treatment, especially if these issues interfere with daily life. A slipped disc often happens due to a mix of natural aging and everyday habits that put extra strain on the spine.

As we get older, our spinal discs naturally lose hydration and flexibility, making them more vulnerable to injury.

Very friendly staff and definitely look for Dr. Chia. Had a case of inflamed tendon on my ankle and thought it would take at least half a year for full recovery. Dr. Chia had it fixed in about a month and half and I would highly vouch for her expertise. Dr. Chia is very sociable therefore making the whole treatment process very enjoyable and less frightening.

Being pain-free is really priceless, especially if it’s affecting the nerve, every min every day, 24x7!I was diagnosed with severe cervical spondylosis - neck bone degeneration esp at c5-c7 with bone spur causing very bad nerve pain at my back shoulder blade and right arm , literally 24x7 since Aug 2024. It really affected my day to day life. A well-known specialist surgeon insisted for immediate surgery but with no guarantee that all will be well. However, I opted for physio, as per another Dr’s recommendation. Unexpectedly came across Regenesis via internet good reviews. That was the best decision I made! Wayne was very patient, knowledgeable, explained to me on every process he did, constantly reminding me on the required exercises and the dos & don’ts. Due to my severe issue, I had visited Regenesis daily for the first 2 weeks & 2 days once later, diligently. After 5.5 mths, the pain subsided ..the visits were then changed to twice weekly just to make sure all in order, till today!Wayne from Regenesis comes highly recommended! This is a sincere and honest testimonial based on my real experience!

Ms Chia is very detail and experience when analysing my shoulder injury (more than 10 years). The road to recovery is a journey but at least the shoulder pain has reduced a lot after the treatment though I still need to do more weight training to strengthen the muscles. Highly recommend this centre especially if you have old injury that has been bothering you.

It has a great experience and I have been there for 12 treatments for a lower back pain. The pain I have suffered all this years is now somewhat lessened after each treatment. In fact after my last treatment, it has improved tremendously. I am unable to continue my treatments as I have been asked by my employer to be relocated overseas for a one year assignment. Upon return if I need their assistance again, I will surely look for them once again.Thank you Regenesis for helping me out. I truly value and appreciate the help and care rendered.

I did a walk-in one evening after spraining my ankle, not wanting to risk it getting worse - especially knowing how notoriously chronic sprain injuries can get if left alone. Given the simplicity of the injury, I expected nothing more than a severity assessment and some home care advice.Instead, Wayne very quickly knew the effective treatment to apply - a combination of massages and dry needling that provided immediate relief. Every technique felt very precise and intentional, which was clearly backed by deep expertise and knowledge. I still received the expected care advice, but I also walked out of the clinic losing the limp that I walked in with.By the next day, my ankle felt almost back to normal SURPRISINGLY - when otherwise, I’m sure it would have continued hurting for days. I know exactly who to thank for this. Don't worry Wayne, I'll still take it easy for the next two weeks at least haha.

How We Work

01

Initial Assessment

Your first session focuses on understanding your pain and movement limitations. Your physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle—this helps us understand the root cause of your pain or dysfunction.

02

Custom Treatment Plan

Based on your condition, we apply a combination of therapy techniques to improve joint mobility and relieve nerve pressure. You’ll also be guided through tailored postural retraining exercises and activity-specific corrections to support spinal alignment, increase flexibility, and build core strength.

03

Improvement

As your condition progresses, we shift focus to long-term strategies like posture correction, core stability, and safe movement habits. You should notice reduced tension and better function within a few sessions. We continually review your response to treatment and adjust your plan to ensure progress.

FAQ on Slipped Disc

Frequently Asked Questions

They are essentially the same condition. “Slipped disc” is a more informal term, while “herniated disc” is the medical term. Both describe the bulging or rupture of a spinal disc that may press on surrounding nerves.

In many cases, yes. Physiotherapy can relieve pain, restore movement, and prevent future flare-ups without surgery — especially when started early. Severe cases may require more intensive care, but physiotherapy is always the first line of treatment.

Not entirely. You should avoid high-impact or twisting movements, but specific exercises guided by a physiotherapist can actually support healing. Movement is important — the right kind of movement.

Surgery is only considered if conservative treatments fail after 6–8 weeks or if there are serious neurological symptoms like loss of bladder/bowel control. Most patients improve with targeted therapy.

If your back or neck pain is persistent, getting worse, or spreading to your limbs — or if you're feeling weakness or numbness — it's time to consult a physiotherapist. Early treatment prevents long-term damage.
